How decks are made

Each deck is built in five steps. Nothing on this site is paid, and you never need an account.

1. The word list

Words are ranked by how often they appear in film and TV subtitles and on the web. Subtitles are close to how people really talk, and web text adds everyday words that films rarely use. Every form of a word (jest, jestem, był) counts towards its dictionary form (być), so the list is of real words, not spellings. A small number of words covers a large share of everyday speech, which is why the first few hundred cards matter most.

2. Example sentences

Each word gets two short sentences about everyday life, written for learners and translated into plain English. A native Polish speaker checks them in batches, and every reported mistake is fixed in the next update.

3. Forms and pronunciation

Every word page shows all its forms: the seven cases of a noun, the declension of an adjective, and the present, past, future and imperative of a verb. These tables are generated with Morfeusz 2 and the SGJP grammatical dictionary of Polish. Pronunciation is written in IPA.

4. Audio

The word and both sentences are read aloud by an open text-to-speech model with a native Polish voice. Every recording is checked by speech recognition and redone if what it hears does not match the card. Recording is in progress, so word pages do not have audio yet.

5. Checking

The Polish deck is checked by a native speaker in batches: a sample of every batch is read and listened to, and anything wrong is fixed across the whole batch. Other decks are checked automatically at first.

Found a mistake?

Every reported mistake is fixed in the next release of the deck. A report form is coming with the first deck.
